I used to be embarrassed to ask
for a box to take my leftovers home.
It felt cheap somehow, like I couldn't afford to leave food behind.
So I'd let perfectly good food get cleared away,
just to seem casual about it.
That seems ridiculous to me now.
There's nothing shameful about not wanting to waste food.
That half a meal becomes a free, easy lunch the next day,
and it means the effort
that went into making it doesn't just end up in the trash.
My grandmother, who grew up with very little, 我奶奶小时候吃过很多苦,
would be horrified at the idea
of leaving good food on a plate.
Now I always ask for the box, proudly.
Being sensible was never something to be embarrassed about.
