Nobody knew where Kay had gone. 没人知道凯去哪儿了。

People said he must have fallen into the river and drowned, 大家都说他肯定是掉进河里淹死了，

and Gerda cried all winter long. 格尔达哭了一整个冬天。

But when spring came, she said to the sunshine, "Kay is dead." 可到了春天，她对阳光说：“凯死了。”

"We don't think so," said the sunshine. “我们可不这么觉得，”阳光说。

She asked the swallows. 她又去问燕子。

"We don't believe it," they said. “我们才不信呢，”燕子们说。

And slowly, Gerda stopped believing it too. 渐渐地，格尔达也不信了。

Hope rarely comes back all at once; 希望很少会一下子全都回来；

sometimes it just grows back, like grass in spring. 有时它只是像春天的青草一样，一点点重新长出来。

One morning, she put on her new red shoes, 一天清晨，她穿上了自己的新红鞋，

the ones Kay had never seen, and walked down to the river. 凯从没见过的那双，然后朝河边走去。

"Did you take my friend?" “是你带走了我的朋友吗？”

she asked. 她问道。

"I'll give you my red shoes if you give him back." “要是你把他还给我，我就把红鞋子送给你。”

The waves seemed to nod. 水波好像点了点头。

So she climbed into a little boat to throw the shoes as far as she could. 于是她爬上一只小船，想使劲把鞋子扔得远远的。

But the boat wasn't tied. 但小船并没有拴好。

It drifted away from the bank, 它漂离了岸边，

and the current carried her off downstream. 水流带着她一路朝下游漂去。
