In a big city, 在一座大城市里，

in two attic rooms that almost touched across a gutter, 有两间阁楼隔着排水沟，几乎挨在了一块儿，

lived a boy named Kay and a girl named Gerda. 里面住着一个叫凯的男孩和一个叫格尔达的女孩。

They weren't brother and sister, 他们并不是亲兄妹，

but they loved each other as if they were. 但感情好得就像亲生的一样。

Between their windows, their families kept boxes of roses, 在两扇窗户中间，两家人摆着几个玫瑰花箱，

and in summer the two children sat in their tiny rose garden, 夏天的时候，两个孩子就坐在这片小小的玫瑰园里，

One winter day, 一个冬日，

as they looked at a picture book together, Kay cried out. 他们正一起看画册，凯突然大叫了一声。

Gerda looked, but there was nothing there. 格尔达看了看，却什么也没发现。

Kay looked up, and his face changed. 凯抬起头，脸色全变了。

"Why are you crying? “你哭什么啊？

It makes you look ugly. 丑死了。

And these roses are rotten and crooked." 而且这些玫瑰都烂了，长得歪歪扭扭的。”

He kicked the flower box and ran off. 他踢了一脚花箱，跑开了。

The saddest changes in people often begin with something too small to see. 一个人最让人心酸的改变，往往是从微小到看不见的地方开始的。

Gerda didn't understand. 格尔达想不明白。

But the boy she loved had already begun to disappear. 但她深爱的那个男孩，已经开始渐渐消失了。
