After that night, the little mermaid grew quiet. 那晚之后，小美人鱼变得沉默了。

At last, one of her sisters found out where the prince lived: 终于，她的一个姐姐打听到了王子住在哪儿：

a palace of pale yellow stone. 那是一座浅黄色的石头宫殿。

She spent many evenings there, watching him in secret. 好多天晚上她都去那儿，偷偷地注视着他。

The more she watched, the more she longed to be human. 越是看着他，她就越渴望变成人类。

Sometimes we only realize how small our world is after glimpsing a bigger one. 有时候，只有见识过更大的世界，才会意识到自己的世界有多小。

"Do humans live forever?" “人类能永远活着吗？”

she asked her grandmother. 她问奶奶。

We live three hundred years, “我们能活三百年，”

But humans have a soul, which lives on forever." “但人类有灵魂，灵魂是永远不灭的。”

"Could I ever have one?" “我也能拥有一个吗？”

Her grandmother hesitated. 奶奶犹豫了一下。

"Only if a human loved you more than anything, and married you. “除非有一个人类爱你胜过一切，并且娶了你。”

But humans think our tails are ugly." “可是人类觉得我们的尾巴很丑。”

The little mermaid looked down at her tail. 小美人鱼低头看了看自己的尾巴。

And a dangerous idea began to form in her mind. 一个危险的念头开始在她脑海中浮现。
