After the accident, Hugh lost his leg,
and with it, every dream he had.
"I'll never be a soldier now," he sobbed.
"I'll never sail around the world."
Everyone kept trying to cheer him up.
"You'll hardly notice it," they said.
"It won't make much difference."
And every time, he felt more alone.
His mother was different.
When he asked her what he'd never be able to do,
she told him the truth.
"You'll never play cricket.
You'll never dance at your sister's parties.
And there will be small, painful moments every day,
watching other boys run and jump."
His sister looked horrified.
But Hugh sat up, brightening for the first time in weeks.
"Go on," he said.
"You know what it's really like.
Everyone else pretends."
Then his mother told him something else.
Each time one of those little moments came,
and he met it with patience instead of bitterness,
that would be a victory.
A small one, invisible to everybody else, but his own.
And those small victories, one after another,
would add up to a life he could be proud of.
Pretending pain isn't there doesn't make it any smaller.
Facing it honestly, one moment at a time, is what finally does.
