My parents keep absolutely everything,

and for years it drove me a little crazy.

Drawers full of plastic bags, cupboards of containers they'll never use,

a garage you can barely walk through.

I'd urge them to let go, and they'd just quietly refuse.

But I've come to understand it differently now.

They grew up with very little,

in a time when you truly couldn't waste anything,

when every object might be needed again.

Their keeping isn't foolish.

It's a habit built from a harder life than mine.

So I've stopped pushing.

Instead of judging their full drawers,

I try to see the history in them.

We come from different worlds.

And a little more patience, I've found, 我也发现,多一点耐心,

works far better than another lecture about clutter.
