最后一个蛋

It was summer in the countryside. 那时乡下正是夏天。

Beside an old moat, under some huge leaves, 在一条旧护城河边，几片大叶子底下，

a duck sat on her nest, waiting for her eggs to hatch. 一只鸭妈妈卧在窝里，等着蛋孵出来。

At last, one by one, they cracked. 终于，蛋一个接一个地裂开了。

But the biggest egg still hadn't hatched. 可最大的那个蛋还是没动静。

An old duck waddled by. 一只老鸭子摇摇摆摆地走了过来。

"That's a turkey egg, I bet. “我敢打赌，那准是个火鸡蛋。

Leave it." 别管它了。”

But the mother kept sitting. 但鸭妈妈还是坚持孵着。

Finally it cracked, and out tumbled the last duckling. 终于，蛋壳破了，最后一只小鸭骨碌碌地翻了出来。

He was huge, and gray, and very, very ugly. 他又大又灰，长得特别特别丑。

The next day, she led her family to the water. 第二天，鸭妈妈带着一家子来到了水边。

Splash! 扑通！

In he went, and swam better than any of the others. 他也跳了进去，而且游得比谁都好。

"No turkey," said his mother proudly. “才不是火鸡呢，”鸭妈妈骄傲地说。

"He's my own child. “他就是我的亲骨肉。

And he isn't so ugly, if you look at him properly." 再说了，要是仔细瞧瞧，他也没那么丑嘛。”

Most of us are beautiful to someone who takes the time to really look. 只要有人肯花时间好好端详，我们大多数人其实都是好看的。

But the other animals in the farmyard weren't going to look. 可农庄里的其他动物才懒得去瞧呢。
