The dog pushed its huge nose right up to him, 那条狗把大鼻子凑到了他跟前，

showed its sharp teeth, and then, splash, went away without touching him. 露出了锋利的牙齿，然后“扑通”一声走开了，碰都没碰他一下。

"Thank goodness," sighed the duckling. “谢天谢地，”小鸭子叹了口气。

"I'm so ugly, even the dog doesn't want to bite me." “我太丑了，连狗都懒得咬我。”

That evening, he found a crooked little cottage. 那天傍晚，他发现了一间歪歪斜斜的小屋。

Inside lived an old woman with her cat and her hen, 里面住着一个老太太，还有她的一只猫和一只母鸡，

who both thought they were the most important creatures in the world. 它俩都觉得自己是世界上顶顶重要的大人物。

"Can you lay eggs?" “你会下蛋吗？”

asked the hen. 母鸡问。

"No." “不会。”

"Can you purr?" “你会打呼噜叫吗？”

asked the cat. 猫问。

"No." “不会。”

"Then keep your opinions to yourself." “那就把嘴闭上，少发表意见。”

One day, the duckling felt a deep longing to float on the water, 有一天，小鸭子打心底里渴望能去水上漂一漂，

and he told the hen. 他就把想法告诉了母鸡。

"What a ridiculous idea!" “多么荒唐的想法啊！”

she clucked. 母鸡咯咯叫着说。

"You're just idle." “你就是闲得发慌。”

"You don't understand me," said the duckling. “你们根本不懂我，”小鸭子说。

"Well, if we don't, who would?" “哼，要是连我们都不懂，谁还能懂？”

People often judge your worth by the only things they know how to do. 人们往往只拿自己擅长的那点东西，来衡量你的价值。

So he left, and went out into the wide world again. 于是他离开了，重新走向了广阔的天地。
