The winter grew bitterly cold. 冬天变得越来越冷，寒气刺骨。

The duckling had to swim around and around to keep the water from freezing, 小鸭子只能不停地游来游去，免得水面结冰，

but every night, his little hole in the ice grew smaller. 但每天晚上，冰面上没结冰的小洞都在变小。

At last, exhausted, he lay still, and froze fast. 最后，它筋疲力竭，一动不动地被紧紧冻在冰里了。

Early next morning, a farmer walking by saw him. 第二天一大早，一个路过的农夫看到了它。

He broke the ice with his wooden shoe and carried the duckling home, 他用木鞋砸开冰块，把小鸭子抱回了家，

where he slowly came back to life. 在那儿，它慢慢缓了过来。

The farmer's children wanted to play with him, 农夫的孩子们想跟它玩，

but the duckling thought they meant to hurt him. 可小鸭子还以为他们要伤害自己。

Terrified, he flew straight into the milk pail, splashing milk everywhere. 它吓坏了，一下子飞进了牛奶桶里，牛奶溅得到处都是。

The woman screamed. 农妇尖叫起来。

Then into the butter barrel, then into the flour. 接着它又掉进了黄油桶，然后又一头栽进面粉堆里。

The children laughed and chased him around the room. 孩子们笑着在屋里追着它到处跑。

Fear can make us run from the very people trying to help us. 恐惧往往会让我们逃离那些真心想帮我们的人。

Luckily, the door was open. 幸好，门是开着的。

He slipped out into the snow and hid under the bushes. 它溜到了外面的雪地里，躲在了灌木丛下面。

And there he stayed, all through that long, hard winter. 就这样，它在那里熬过了整个漫长而艰难的冬天。
