Jill has high blood pressure, and she needs to keep it from climbing any higher.
Her doctor asked her to check it once a week,
so today she tries it for the first time,
at the back of the drugstore.
She sits down, wraps the cuff around her arm, and takes a reading.
Too high.
She takes another.
Still too high.
A third.
High again.
"Something is wrong," Jill tells the clerk.
"These numbers seem too high."
The clerk smiles.
"That can happen when you move your arm or your head.
You have to be completely still."
So Jill tries once more — this time perfectly still.
The reading settles right where it should be.
The numbers were never wrong.
She just had to be still long enough to read them true.
Some things in life are like that: you only see them clearly once you stop moving.
