We'd been talking all day. 我们聊了一整天。

Six old friends on a camping trip, catching up on three years. 六个老朋友一起露营，补上这三年没聊的话。

By evening, I was a little tired of my own voice. 到了傍晚，我自己说得都有点烦了。

Then somebody lit the fire. 然后有人把篝火生了起来。

At first we kept talking. 一开始我们还在接着聊。

But the fire was pulling at us. 但那团火好像有种吸引力。

One by one, we stopped in the middle of sentences 渐渐地，大家话说到一半就停了，

and just looked at it. 只是看着那团火。

A log cracked. 木头啪地爆开了一声。

Sparks went up and disappeared. 火星窜上去，又消失了。

The flames were orange, then blue at the bottom, 火焰是橙色的，底下泛着蓝光，

never the same shape twice. 形态一直在变，从不重复。

Nobody spoke for maybe twenty minutes. 大概有二十分钟，谁都没说话。

It wasn't awkward. 但一点也不尴尬。

It was easy. 反而很自在。

Our faces were warm, our backs were cold, 脸烤得暖烘烘的，后背却凉飕飕的，

and we were all watching the same thing. 我们眼里看着同一簇火。

I think we said more in those twenty 我觉得在那二十分钟里，

minutes than we had all day. 我们说的话比一整天都多。

The fire did the talking. 火替我们把话都说了。
