The hill was long, 那段上坡路很长,
and I was on a rented bicycle with only three gears,
and none of them were helping.
Halfway up, my legs were burning.
I stood on the pedals.
I thought seriously about getting off and pushing.
Then the road went flat.
And then it tipped.
I stopped pedaling.
The bike began to roll by itself, slowly at first, then faster.
The wind came into my sleeves
and filled my jacket like a sail.
My eyes were watering,
and I was making a sound I hadn't made since childhood.
Something like "Woooo."
I'm forty-four.
I have a mortgage.
For ninety seconds, I was ten years old,
with my feet off the pedals.
That's the deal a hill offers you.
Nobody gets the downhill without the climb.
But the downhill is always there.
