I'm always the slowest in a hiking group.

It's at the back, breathing loudly, watching everyone's backpacks get smaller.

On this trip, there was a man behind me.

Every time I stopped, he stopped.

He'd look at a tree, or tie his shoe,

or take a photo of a rock.

I felt sorry for him.

We walked like that all day, 我们就这样走了一整天,

me in front, him ten steps back.

He never passed me.

Sometimes he said, "Nice pace," which was kind, and untrue.

At the campsite, I heard the others talking.

He was the group leader.

He'd climbed this mountain forty times.

He could have run it.

He wasn't slow.

He was walking at my speed, on purpose,

so that I would never be last.

He never said a word about it.
