We climbed for three hours.

The last part was steep and rocky, and I stopped talking completely.

At the top, I sat down on a flat stone,

opened my backpack, and found my sandwich.

It had been under a water bottle the whole way.

It was flat.

The bread was a little wet on one side.

In my kitchen, I would have looked at it with pity.

I took a bite.

I'm telling you, it was the best sandwich of my life.

I have eaten in good restaurants.

Nothing has ever tasted like that flat piece of bread and cheese,

with the wind on my neck

and the whole valley under my boots.

It wasn't the sandwich, of course.

Hunger is the best cook.

And three hours of climbing is the best table in the world.
