There's a rule on mountain trails. 爬山的时候有这么个不成文的规矩。
When you're coming down, 当你下山时,
and you meet someone going up, you say something kind. 要是碰上往上爬的人,总得说句打气的话。
I was the one going up. 而我就是那个往上爬的人。
It was hot. 天特别热。
My water was half gone, 我的水已经喝掉了一半,
and I had seriously begun to wonder 我开始非常认真地怀疑,
why people do this for fun. 怎么会有人把这玩意儿当乐子。
A couple came down, smiling. 一对小夫妻笑着走下来。
"Almost there! “快到啦!
Maybe twenty minutes." 大概也就二十分钟吧。”
It was not twenty minutes. 结果根本不止二十分钟。
A family came down. 又有一家人走下来。
"You're so close! “马上就到了!
Just around the corner." 转个弯就是。”
There were several corners. 结果前面拐了好几个弯。
An old woman with two sticks came down. 一个拄着双拐的老太太走了下来。
"Nearly at the top, dear. “快到顶了,孩子。
It's worth it." 上面的风景绝对值。”
It was another hour. 结果我又走了一个小时。
All of them lied to me. 他们全都在骗我。
Cheerfully, warmly. 而且骗得那么热心,那么真诚。
But here's the thing. 但奇妙的是,
Every time, I walked a little faster. 每一次听完,我脚步都会快上一点。
On the way down, 等到我下山的时候,
I met a young man, red in the face. 迎面碰上个满脸通红的年轻小伙。
I smiled at him. 我冲他笑了笑。
"Almost there," I said. “快到啦,”我说道。
