I grew up in a big city. 我是在大城市里长大的。

When I was a child, 小的时候，

I thought the night sky was orange, with maybe five stars. 我还以为夜空本来就是橙色的，天上大概也就五颗星星。

I knew about the Milky Way, of course. 我当然知道有银河这回事。

Last summer, I went camping in the mountains, far from any town. 去年夏天，我去了远离城镇的深山里露营。

Around midnight, I got up and stepped outside the tent. 半夜那会儿，我起来走出帐篷。

I looked up, and I actually stopped breathing. 一抬头，我整个人都屏住了呼吸。

There weren't five stars. 天上哪止五颗星啊。

There were more stars than sky. 那星星密得，感觉比夜空本身还多。

And across the middle, from one side to the other, 就在正中间，横跨了整片天空，

was a wide, pale river of light. 淌着一条宽宽的、泛着微光的银河。

I was thirty years old. 那年我都三十岁了。

I stood there with my neck bent back until it hurt. 我就站在那儿一直仰着头，直到脖子都酸了。

I felt very small, and somehow that felt good. 我觉得自己特别渺小，但不知怎么的，这种感觉还挺好的。

It had been up there every night of my life. 原来这片星空一直都在，在我生命里的每一个夜晚。

Right above my bedroom. 就在我卧室的正上方。

It never left. 它从来没有离开过。

Our lights were just too bright to see it. 只是我们城市的灯光太亮了，一直没能看见它。
