A young man from my company asked me for coffee.

He's twenty-three, in his first job,

and he looked like he hadn't slept.

"Everyone else seems to know what they're doing," he said.

"I feel like a fraud."

I knew that face.

And I heard myself say something.

"Nobody knows what they're doing.

The ones who look confident are just better at standing still."

He laughed.

His shoulders dropped a little.

On the way home, I realized those weren't my words.

My first manager said them to me,

when I was twenty-three and ready to quit.

I'd carried that sentence for fifteen years, 这句话我记了十五年,

without knowing I was only holding it for someone.

It was never mine.

It was on loan.

Now it's his.

Someday, across some table, he'll hand it on.

Good advice doesn't belong to anyone.

It just keeps moving.
