Wandering blind, Gloucester met a ragged beggar: Poor Tom. 双目失明的格罗斯特一路流浪，碰到了一个衣衫褴褛的乞丐，名叫“可怜的汤姆”。

It was his own son Edgar, though he couldn't see him. 那其实是他自己的亲生儿子埃德加，只是他看不见罢了。

"As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; “我们在神明眼里，就像淘气孩子手里的苍蝇；

they kill us for their sport." 他们弄死我们，不过是为了找乐子。”

Gloucester asked the beggar to lead him to the cliffs of Dover. 格罗斯特求这个乞丐带他去多佛悬崖。

He meant to jump. 他本打算跳下去一死了之。

Edgar agreed, but led him to a flat field instead, 埃德加答应了，但实际上把他带到了一片平地上，

and told him he stood at the cliff's edge. 还骗他说，他已经站在悬崖边上了。

Gloucester fell forward, and landed safely on the grass. 格罗斯特往前一栽，结果平平安安地摔在草地上。

Edgar, changing his voice, told him his life was a miracle. 埃德加换了副嗓音，对他说能活下来简直是个奇迹。

So Gloucester chose to live, and endure. 于是格罗斯特决定活下去，咬牙熬住受过的苦。

Then a strange figure came wandering by, 就在这时，一个怪模怪样的人晃晃悠悠地走了过来，

crowned with wild flowers, talking wildly. 头上戴着野花编的冠，嘴里语无伦次地胡话连篇。

It was Lear. 那正是李尔王。

The mad king and the blind earl met at last. 发了疯的国王与双目失明的伯爵，终于相遇了。

Sometimes you have to lose your eyes before you can really see. 有时候，人得先瞎了双眼，才能真正看清这个世界。

Gloucester reached out. 格罗斯特把手伸了过去。

"O, let me kiss that hand!" “啊，让我亲一亲那只手吧！”
