观鸟

I used to think birdwatching was a hobby 我以前总觉得观鸟这种爱好，

for retired people with expensive cameras. 都是拿着昂贵相机的退休老人才干的事。

Then a friend handed me a cheap pair of binoculars, 后来一个朋友随手塞给我一副便宜的望远镜，

and now I'm completely hooked, and a little embarrassed about how much. 结果我现在彻底入坑了，迷到自己都觉得有点不好意思。

There's something strange and wonderful about standing 有一种既奇特又美妙的感觉：

still in a park for twenty minutes, 在公园里一动不动地站上二十分钟，

just waiting, to catch a glimpse of one small bird. 就为了能瞥见一眼某只小鸟，一直在那儿等着。

It has taught me to slow down and actually look. 它教会了我慢下来，真正用眼睛去观察。

I walk the same streets I've walked for years, 走在那些我走了好多年的街上，

and suddenly I notice there are dozens 突然间我发现，原来身边有几十种

of birds I never saw before. 我以前从来没见过的鸟。

They were always there. 它们其实一直都在那里，

I just wasn't paying attention. 只是我之前根本没留意罢了。

That's the real gift of it. 这才是观鸟真正送给我的礼物。

It didn't add birds to my world. 它并没有让我的世界平白多出鸟来，

It opened my eyes to a whole layer of life 而是打开了我的双眼，让我看到了生命中全新的一层，

that was there the entire time. 而这一层，其实从始至终都在那里。
