I never thought of myself as an athletic person,
and then a friend dragged me to a climbing gym.
My first attempt was humiliating.
I got about six feet off the ground,
my arms started shaking, and I climbed right back down.
But something about it hooked me.
It's not really about strength.
It's a puzzle.
You stand at the bottom and study the wall,
working out where to put each hand and foot,
like a problem you solve with your whole body.
My hands are covered in calluses now, and I fall constantly.
But every time I reach the top of something
that beat me last week,
I feel a kind of pride I haven't felt
since I was a kid.
Falling, it turns out, is just part of climbing.
