There's a specific little battle I fight almost every day.
It's the elevator.
A neighbor steps in, the doors close,
and suddenly there are ten silent seconds where I have to decide,
do I say something,
or do we both just stare at the numbers.
For years I chose the numbers.
It felt safer.
But lately I've been forcing myself to say something small.
Nice weather.
Long day.
That's a cute dog.
And honestly, it's never once gone badly.
Most people seem relieved that someone broke the silence.
Those tiny exchanges don't change my life,
but they leave me feeling a little 但确实能让我觉得,
more connected to the people I live near.
It turns out the awkward silence was always
scarier in my head than saying hello ever is.
