The first time I got into a kayak,
I flipped it within about ten seconds.
I went straight into the cold water, came up gasping,
and everyone on the shore had a good laugh.
I could have been embarrassed enough to never try again.
But once I climbed back in and actually got moving,
I understood why people love it.
Out on the water, everything gets quiet.
It's just you, the paddle,
and the sound of it dipping in and out.
The city, the noise, the phone in a dry bag,
all of it feels a hundred miles away.
I still tip over sometimes.
But now, falling in is just part of the fun.
Some of the best things are on the other
side of looking a little foolish first.
