Last autumn I got into foraging for wild mushrooms,

and the first rule I learned was to be a little afraid.

It's a hobby where a mistake can actually hurt you,

so you learn to be humble and patient very quickly.

I spend hours walking slowly through the woods, eyes down,

learning to tell one mushroom from another that looks almost identical.

I don't even pick most of what I find.

Honestly, I still only trust myself with two or three types.

But it's changed how I see a forest.

It used to be just green scenery I walked past.

Now it's a place full of tiny details and quiet clues.

Foraging taught me that paying close attention is its own reward,

whether or not I come home with dinner.
