组装拧螺丝

A flat-pack shelf arrived today, 今天买的组装架子到了，

so I clear some floor space and tip all the pieces out of the box. 于是我腾出点地方，把箱子里的零件全倒了出来。

I flip through the manual, matching each part to the little diagrams, 我翻了翻说明书，把每个零件和图示一一对上，

and lay out the screws in a row so I don't lose any. 又把螺丝整齐地排成一排，省得弄丢。

I fit the panels together, line up the holes, 我把板子拼在一起，对齐孔位，

and drive the screws in with a screwdriver, 用螺丝刀把螺丝拧进去，

tightening each one until it's snug. 每一个都拧得严严实实。

A couple of nails go in with a hammer to hold the back panel in place — 接着用锤子钉上几颗钉子固定背板——

tap, tap, careful of my thumb. 嗒、嗒，可得小心别砸到大拇指。

Halfway through, I realize I've put one piece in backwards, 装到一半，我才发现有一块板子装反了，

so I undo it and try again, laughing at myself. 只能自嘲地笑笑，拆下来重新装。

There's a quiet pride in building something with your own hands, 亲手把东西做出来，真有一种由衷的自豪感，

even a cheap shelf from a box. 哪怕只是个从箱子里拆出来的便宜架子。

I give it a wobble to check it's steady, 我摇了摇它，确认立得很稳，

stand it against the wall, and admire my work. 最后把它靠墙放好，美滋滋地欣赏起自己的杰作。
