A town mouse went to visit his cousin in the country. 一只城里老鼠去乡下看望他的表兄。
Dinner was simple: beans, bread, and a little cheese. 晚餐很简单：豆子、面包，还有一点点奶酪。
"How can you live like this?" “你这日子怎么过得下去啊？”
said the town mouse. 城里老鼠说。
"Come to the city with me. “跟我去城里吧。
You'll eat like a king." 保准你吃得像国王一样。”
So they went. 于是它们就去了。
That night, they found the remains of a big dinner on a table: 那天晚上，它们在一张桌子上发现了一顿大餐吃剩下的东西：
cake, fruit, and fine meat. 有蛋糕、水果，还有上等的好肉。
The country mouse couldn't believe his eyes. 乡下老鼠简直不敢相信自己的眼睛。
Then they heard a loud bark. 就在这时，它们听到了一声响亮的狗叫。
Two huge dogs ran into the room, 两只大狗冲进了房间，
and the mice had to run for their lives. 老鼠们只得拼命逃跑。
Shaking, the country mouse picked up his bag. 乡下老鼠吓得直发抖，收拾起了自己的包。
"Goodbye, cousin," he said. “再见啦，表兄，”它说，
"I'd rather eat beans in peace than cake in fear." “我宁可安安心心吃豆子，也不想提心吊胆吃蛋糕。”
