On the fourth planet lived a businessman.

He was so busy counting that he did not even look up.

500 million stars, he said.

I own them all.

What do you do with them?

The prince asked.

I count them and I write the number on paper.

Then I lock the paper away.

That makes me rich.

But how does owning them help the stars?

The prince asked.

The businessman had no answer because he had never once thought about it.

The prince shook his head.

I own a flower, and I water her every day, he said.

That is useful to my flower, “那对我的花是有用的,

but you are not useful to your stars.

And he left.

The fifth planet was the smallest of all.

On it stood one lamp and one lamplighter.

Every minute he lit the lamp,

then put it out, then lit it again,

without ever resting.

It was silly work, yet the prince liked this man.

At least he thinks about something other than himself, the prince said.

Of all the grown-ups, only the lamplighter seemed less foolish,

because he cared for something beyond his own small life.
