We have a dryer. 我们家有烘干机。

It's fast. 烘得挺快的。

But on sunny days, I still hang the laundry on the balcony. 但出太阳的时候，我还是会把衣服晾在阳台上。

It's a slow job. 这是个慢活儿。

You shake each thing out with a snap. 得把每件衣服都抖开、抖平整。

You pin it by the shoulders. 再用夹子夹住肩膀的位置。

This morning there was a wind. 今天早晨起了风。

When I finished, I stood and watched. 晾完后，我就站在那儿看着。

The white shirts filled with air and went round, like sails. 白衬衫被风吹得鼓鼓的，像帆一样转来转去。

Then they went flat. 然后又瘪下去。

Then full again. 接着又鼓起来。

In and out, slowly. 一鼓一瘪，慢慢地动着。

They looked like they were breathing. 看着就像在呼吸一样。

My son's small T-shirt was dancing next to his father's big one. 我儿子的小T恤在他爸爸的大T恤旁边晃晃悠悠，像在跳舞。

But a machine dries clothes in a dark box, 可烘干机只是把衣服关在黑盒子里烘干，

and you see nothing. 你什么也看不见。

Out here, I get a small show. 在阳台这儿，我还能看一场小小的表演。

By afternoon, they'll be warm and stiff, 到了下午，衣服就会变得暖烘烘、硬邦邦的，

and they'll smell like the day. 闻起来还有阳光的味道。

You can't buy that smell. 这种味道是买不来的。

You can only hang it up and wait. 你只能把它晾起来，慢慢等。
