My whole apartment needed cleaning. 我整间屋子都该好好打扫了。
I looked at it on Sunday morning 周日早上我看着这一屋子狼藉,
and felt tired before I began. 还没动手就觉得累了。
So I made a deal with myself. 于是我和自己谈了个条件。
One drawer. 就收拾一个抽屉。

The messy one in the kitchen that every home has. 就厨房里最乱的那个,谁家都有这么一个抽屉。
I emptied it onto the table. 我把里面的东西一股脑全倒在桌上。
Three pens that didn't work. 三支写不出水的笔。
Batteries, maybe dead, maybe not. 几节不知道还有没有电的电池。
A key that fits no door I know. 一把不知道开哪扇门的钥匙。
And, at the very bottom, a photograph. 还有,在最底下,有一张照片。
My father and me at the beach. 我和爸爸在海边的合影。
I'm maybe eight, missing a front tooth. 我大概八岁,缺了颗门牙。
I thought I'd lost that picture when I moved. 我一直以为搬家的时候把它弄丢了。
I sat down and looked at it for a long time. 我坐下来,看了它好久好久。
Then I put back what I needed, and closed the drawer. 然后我把用得着的东西放回去,关上了抽屉。
One drawer. 一个抽屉。
Twenty minutes. 二十分钟。
The apartment was still a mess. 屋子里其实还是乱糟糟的。
But I felt as if I'd cleaned the whole place. 但我感觉整间屋子都收拾干净了。
