At six in the evening, the fishing boats came back.
I was sitting on the harbor wall
with my legs hanging over the water.
You could hear them before you saw them.
And the seagulls, hundreds of them, 还有那些海鸥,成百上千只,
following each boat in a noisy white cloud, screaming for scraps.
A man threw a rope.
Another man caught it without looking.
I had a paper box of fish and chips on my knees,
from the little window by the pier.
The fish had been swimming that morning.
I ate with my fingers.
There was grease on my hands, on my chin, on my jeans.
A seagull landed beside me and gave me a long, serious look.
"No," I said.
The sun went into the sea.
I didn't take a photo.
My hands were too oily.
I'm glad.
