The ferry to the island takes forty minutes. 坐轮渡去岛上要四十分钟。

As soon as we left the dock, my phone lost its signal. 船刚一离港，我的手机就没信号了。

Everyone else went inside, to the warm room with the coffee machine. 其他人都进屋了，去了那个有咖啡机的暖和房间。

I stayed on the deck. 我留在了甲板上。

There was nothing to do out there. 外面其实什么也做不了。

So I held the rail and looked. 所以我只是扶着栏杆看着。

The water was dark green, 海水是墨绿色的，

and the boat cut a white line through it. 船在水面上划出了一道白线。

Seagulls followed us, hanging in the air without moving their wings. 海鸥一路跟着我们，翅膀都不动一下，就那么悬在空中。

At first, the island was a gray line. 起初，那座岛只是一道灰线。

I couldn't tell it from a cloud. 我都分不清它到底是岛还是云。

Then it had a shape. 慢慢地，它有了轮廓。

Then hills. 然后能看出山丘了。

Then, one by one, a lighthouse, 接着，一座灯塔、

a church, the red roofs of houses. 一座教堂，还有红色的房屋屋顶，都挨个显现出来。

A plane would have dropped me there in a moment, already arrived. 要是坐飞机，一眨眼功夫就把我送到了，直接就算抵达。

The ferry let me watch it come. 但轮渡让我能一路看着它慢慢靠近。

Some places should be approached slowly. 有些地方，本来就该慢慢抵达。
