My uncle took me fishing on Saturday. 周六我叔叔带我去钓鱼了。

I'd never been. 我以前从没去过。

He gave me a rod, showed me how to throw the line, 他给了我一根鱼竿,教了我怎么抛线,

and then stopped talking, which is his way. 然后就不说话了,他平时就这样。

We stood in the stream in rubber boots, twenty meters apart. 我们穿着橡胶雨靴站在小溪里,中间隔了二十米远。

The water pushed gently against my legs. 溪水轻轻地从我腿边冲过。

One hour. 一个小时过去了。

Nothing. 啥动静也没有。

Two hours. 两个小时过去了。

A leaf. 就漂过来一片树叶。

Somewhere in the third hour, I stopped waiting for a fish. 到了第三个小时的某个时候,我不再眼巴巴盼着鱼上钩了。

I noticed the light moving on the water. 我注意到水面上晃动的光影。

A blue bird went past, fast and low. 一只蓝色的小鸟飞了过去,又快又低。

At five, my uncle walked over. 五点的时候,我叔叔走了过来。

"Anything?" “有收获没?”

"Me neither." “我也一样。”

He looked completely satisfied. 他看起来却心满意足。

In the car, I worked it out. 坐在车里时,我终于想明白了。

He's been fishing for forty years, and he often catches nothing. 他钓了四十年的鱼,而且经常空手而归。

He doesn't mind at all. 但他一点也不在乎。

The fish are just the excuse. 钓鱼不过是个借口,

The afternoon is the catch. 这一下午的时光,才是他真正的收获。
