A plain grey bird was walking through a garden where peacocks lived. 一只灰扑扑的小鸟溜达进了一个住着孔雀的花园。
On the ground, he found some of their long, colorful feathers. 它在地上发现了几根孔雀掉落的、又长又漂亮的羽毛。
"With these, I could be beautiful too," he thought. “有了这些，我也能变漂亮了，”它心想。
He tied the feathers to his tail and walked proudly toward the peacocks. 它把羽毛绑在自己的尾巴上，得意洋洋地朝着孔雀走去。
But they weren't fooled for a second. 但孔雀们一眼就看穿了。
"You're not one of us," they said. “你根本不是我们一伙的，”它们说。
They pulled out the feathers and chased him away. 它们一把拔掉那些羽毛，把它给赶跑了。
Sad and embarrassed, he flew back to his own family. 它又伤心又难堪，灰溜溜地飞回了自己家里。
But they had seen everything. 可家人们早就把一切都看在眼里了。
"Oh, so now we're good enough for you?" “哟，现在看得上我们了？”
they said, and turned their backs on him. 它们说完，纷纷背过身去不再理它。
Now he belonged nowhere. 这下，它在哪儿都容不下了。
