The little prince began to travel, and near his planet were several small worlds. 小王子开始旅行，他的星球附近有几个小世界。

He decided to visit them, hoping to learn something and to find something to do. 他决定去拜访它们，希望能学到些什么，并找到些事情做。

The first planet belonged to a king. 第一个星球属于一位国王。

The king wore a great robe, and he sat on a simple throne. 国王穿着一件宽大的长袍，坐在一张简朴的宝座上。

Ah, a subject, “啊，一个臣民！”

the king cried when he saw the prince. 国王看到小王子时喊道。

Come closer so I can see you better. “走近些，好让我看得更清楚。”

The prince was tired and wanted to sit down, 小王子很累，想坐下来，

but the king said, 但国王说：

I order you to sit. “我命令你坐下。”

The strange thing was, the king ordered everyone to do exactly what they were already doing. 奇怪的是，国王命令每个人做的，都正是他们已经在做的事情。

Can you order the sun to set, “你能命令太阳下山吗？”

the prince asked. 小王子问道。

Of course, said the king, “当然，”国王说，

but I will wait until evening when the time is right. “但我会等到傍晚，时机成熟的时候。”

The king believed he ruled the stars, the sea, and everyone alive, 国王相信他统治着星星、大海和所有活着的人，

yet he had no real subjects at all, only himself. 然而他根本没有真正的臣民，只有他自己。

A wise ruler, the king said proudly, only asks for what is possible, “一个明智的统治者，”国王骄傲地说，“只要求可能的事情。”

but he was really just a lonely old man giving orders to an empty world. 但他实际上只是一个孤独的老人，对一个空荡荡的世界发号施令。

The prince said goodbye and left. 小王子告别后离开了。

Grown-ups, he thought, are very strange. “大人，”他想，“真是太奇怪了。”
