I had a bad day.

The kind where nothing terrible happens,

but everything is a little bit wrong.

When I got home, I didn't want to cook.

I washed one cup of rice, pressed the button,

and lay down on the sofa in my coat.

Twenty minutes later, I heard it.

Click.

Every child from a rice-eating home knows that sound.

It means: it's ready.

It means: come.

I got up and opened the lid.

A cloud of white steam rose into my face.

Underneath, the rice was shining, every grain standing up.

I had nothing else.

I ate it at the counter, straight from the bowl,

and I felt my shoulders come down.

The day was still the same day.

But there was hot rice at the end of it.

Some days, that's enough to call it a good one.
