I went back to my hometown after nine years away.

Almost everything had changed.

New buildings.

New roads.

I got lost two streets from my own house.

But on the corner of the old street,

the breakfast stand was still there.

Same blue cart.

Same big pot of steam.

The owner's hair had gone white.

His hands were slower.

I stood in line like a stranger,

a little shy, practicing what to say.

When I got to the front, he looked up.

He looked at me for about two seconds.

"No scallions, right?"

I couldn't speak.

I just nodded.

Nine years.

Thousands of customers.

I had changed my city, my job,

even my name on some papers.

And this man still remembered how I like my breakfast.

I ate it standing up, right there.

It tasted exactly like being known.
