At certain dinners, especially back home, not drinking can feel almost impossible.

Someone raises a glass to you, everyone's watching,

and saying no feels like an insult.

For years I just went along with it,

drinking more than I wanted, because refusing seemed rude.

But I've slowly learned to hold my ground, kindly.

I raise my glass with everyone, I join the toast,

but I sip water or tea instead.

I smile, I stay warm, I don't make it a big deal.

And you know what?

The world doesn't end.

Real friends don't actually need you

to drink to prove you care about them.

It took me a long time to realize

that being pressured into something isn't the same as being welcomed.

You can be fully part of the table without an empty glass.
