For most of my life, I said yes to everything. 在我过去的大半时间里,我对什么事都说“好”。
Yes to favors I didn't have time for, 答应那些我根本没空帮的忙,
yes to plans I didn't want, 答应那些我根本不想去的聚会,
yes to extra work that wasn't mine. 接下那些根本不属于我的额外工作。
I thought being agreeable made me a good person. 我曾以为有求必应就代表我是个好人,
Instead it just made me exhausted and quietly resentful. 可到头来,这只让我精疲力竭,心里还憋着怨气。
The turning point came 转折发生在那一次,
when I said yes to helping someone move 我答应了帮别人搬家,
on the one weekend I'd promised to rest, 可那个周末明明是我答应自己要好好休息的,
and I spent the whole day angry at myself. 结果一整天我都在生自己的闷气。
That's when I realized something. 也就是在那时,我突然明白了一件事:
Every time I say yes to something I don't want, 每当我答应一件自己不想要的事,
I'm saying no to something I actually do want. 我其实就是在对自己真正想要的事说“不”。
Now I try to pause before answering. 现在,在回答之前我都会试着先停顿一下。
No is a complete sentence. 说“不”本身就是一句完整的话。
And the people who really matter don't leave 而且那些真正重要的人,并不会离你而去,
when you start using it. 哪怕你开始学会拒绝。
