On a first date once, before our food had even arrived,

the woman across from me asked how many children I wanted

and what I thought we should name them.

I nearly choked on my water.

I understood the impulse.

She knew what she wanted and didn't want to waste time.

But planning our imaginary family before we'd finished the appetizers was,

let's say, a lot.

There's a difference between knowing what you want

on a stranger you met twenty minutes ago.

Wanting a future is wonderful.

But you still have to let the present breathe a little first,

before you decide someone is the rest of your life.
