There's a small moment of panic

at the end of every group dinner.

The bill arrives, and nobody quite knows how to handle it.

Do we split it evenly,

even though one person only had a salad

and someone else ordered three drinks?

Do we all pull out our phones

and calculate exactly what we each owe?

I've seen friendships get quietly awkward over a few dollars.

My rule now is simple.

If the difference is small,

I just let it go and split evenly.

The friendship is worth far more than five dollars.

Counting every cent might feel fair,

but it leaves a strange taste on an otherwise nice evening.

Some things are worth more than being exactly even.

A relaxed table is one of them.
