During a hard famine, 有一年闹大饥荒，

a wealthy baker called the poorest children of the town to his shop. 镇上一位富有的面包师把镇里最穷的一帮孩子叫到了店里。

In a basket sat fresh loaves of bread. 篮子里摆着新鲜出炉的面包。

"Take one each," he said, “每人拿一个，”他说，

"and come back every day until times get better." “在日子好起来之前，每天都可以过来拿。”

The children pushed and shoved, each grabbing the biggest loaf they could, 孩子们推推搡搡，争先恐后地抢最大的面包，

and ran off without a word of thanks — 连句谢谢都没说就跑开了——

all except one small girl, who waited quietly at the back, 只有一个小女孩例外，她安安静静地等在最后面，

took the smallest loaf that was left, 拿了剩下的最小的一块，

kissed the baker's hand, and went home. 亲了亲面包师的手才回家。

The next day the others fought over the big loaves again; 第二天，其他孩子又去抢大面包；

But when her mother cut it open, silver coins tumbled out. 可当她妈妈切开面包时，里面却掉出了一堆银币。

Frightened, the girl ran back to return them. 女孩吓坏了，赶紧跑回去还钱。

The baker just smiled. 面包师只是笑了笑。

"No, child. “不用还，孩子。

I hid them in the smallest loaf on purpose, to reward you. 我是故意把钱藏在最小的面包里奖给你的。
