I was late for work, rushing down the street, 我上班快迟到了，正急匆匆地在街上赶路，

when I saw an elderly woman standing at the curb with two heavy bags, 这时看到一位老奶奶提着两个沉甸甸的袋子站在路边，

staring nervously at the busy road. 神色紧张地看着眼前车流不息的马路。

Everyone else streamed past her, heads down, lost in their own worlds. 其他人都低着头从她身边匆匆走过，完全沉浸在自己的世界里。

For a second I almost did too — 有那么一瞬间，我也差点就这么直接走过去了——

I really didn't have time. 因为我当时确实太赶时间了。

But I stopped, offered to carry her bags, and walked her across. 但我还是停下了脚步，主动帮她提着袋子，陪她走过了马路。

It took maybe ninety seconds. 前后其实也就花了一分半钟。

She thanked me as if I'd done something enormous, and honestly, 她连连向我道谢，就好像我帮了什么天大的忙一样，说真的，

the look on her face stayed with me all day. 她当时脸上的神情，让我记了一整天。

It's easy to tell ourselves we're too busy to help. 我们总很容易找借口，觉得自己太忙了没空搭把手。

But most of the time, 但很多时候，

lending a hand costs us almost nothing — a minute, 帮个小忙其实根本费不了多少工夫——就一分钟的事，

a little effort — 费一点点力气——

and means the whole world to the person on the other end. 对需要帮助的人来说，却可能意味着整个世界。

We're rarely as short on time as we tell ourselves. 其实我们根本没有自己以为的那么缺时间。
