A grand clock on a mantelpiece loved to boast. 壁炉架上摆着一座气派的大钟，平时可爱吹牛了。

"Look at me," “瞧瞧我，”

it would tick to the old sundial out in the garden. 它总冲着花园里那座老日晷嘀嗒显摆：

"I tell the time day and night, rain or shine. “我不分白天黑夜、不管刮风下雨都能报时。

What use are you the moment the sky clouds over?" 天一阴下来，你还能顶什么用？”

The sundial said nothing. 日晷什么也没说。

Then one winter the clock's spring broke, 后来有一年冬天，大钟的发条断了，

and for weeks it sat silent, its hands frozen, completely useless. 一连好几个星期它都一声不吭，指针彻底停摆，成了个没用的摆设。

Whenever the sun came out, 每当太阳出来，

the family went back to relying on the humble sundial. 一家人就又得指望那座不起眼的日晷。

By the time the clock was finally repaired, 等大钟终于修好的时候，

it had grown noticeably quieter. 它明显安静老实多了。

It had learned something worth knowing: 它懂得了一个很深刻的道理：

the moment you start boasting about how much better you are than everyone else, 当你一旦开始显摆自己比谁都强，
