Many years ago, 很多年前，

there lived an emperor who cared about nothing in the world except new clothes. 有一位皇帝，除了新衣服，世上的一切他都不在乎。

He didn't care about his soldiers, 他既不关心自己的士兵，

or the theater, or riding through the countryside, 也不喜欢看戏或去郊外游玩，

unless it was a chance to show off a new outfit. 除非是能借机炫耀一下他的新衣服。

He had a different coat for every hour of the day. 他一天里的每一个钟头都要换一件外套。

In other kingdoms, when people asked where the king was, 在别的国家，如果有人问国王在哪儿，

they'd say, "He's in his council room." 大家会说：“他在议事室呢。”

But here, they always said, "The Emperor is in his wardrobe." 但在这里，人们总是说：“皇帝在更衣室呢。”

He spent all his time, 他把所有的时间，

and almost all the country's money, on things to wear. 以及国家几乎所有的钱，都花在了穿衣打扮上。

The more we care about how we look, 一个人越是在意自己的外表，

the easier we are to fool. 就越容易被人糊弄。

One day, two strangers arrived in the capital. 有一天，京城里来了两个陌生人。

And they had heard all about the Emperor's weakness. 他们早就把皇帝的这个软肋摸得一清二楚。
