苦难之山

Once, the story goes, 有这么一个传说，

the gods announced that everyone on earth could come to a great plain, 神明向世人宣布，所有人都可以去到一片大平原上，

throw their troubles onto one big pile, 把各自的烦恼都扔成一个大堆，

and pick up someone else's instead. 然后再换别人的烦恼带走。

People came from everywhere, dragging their burdens behind them. 人们从四面八方赶来，身后拖着各自沉重的包袱。

One man threw down his poverty. 有人扔掉了自己的贫穷。

Another tossed away his bad back. 另一个人甩掉了折磨人的腰疼。

A woman flung aside her plain face, 一个女人丢掉了自己平庸的相貌，

and a young man his crushing shyness. 还有一个年轻人扔掉了让他痛苦窒息的内向胆怯。

The pile grew into a mountain. 那堆烦恼越聚越多，最后堆成了一座大山。

Then came the swap. 接下来就是交换的环节了。

A man who'd hated his short temper picked up a lifelong illness. 一个讨厌自己暴脾气的男人，换来了一场伴随终身的慢性病。

The woman who'd thrown away her plain face walked off with someone's endless debts. 那个扔掉平庸长相的女人，领走了一身怎么也还不清的债务。

An old man traded his aching joints for a wild, 一位老人用关节酸痛换来了一个叛逆放荡、

ungrateful son, and was soon groaning louder than ever. 不知感恩的逆子，没过多久，他的哀叹声比以前叫得还要惨。

Within minutes, the whole plain was full of complaints. 不出几分钟，整片平原上就全都是抱怨声。

Everyone's new burden seemed heavier, more awkward, 每个人都觉得新换来的包袱更沉重、更别扭，

and far more painful than the old one. 而且比原来的痛苦得多。

Finally, taking pity on them, the gods allowed everyone to swap back. 最后，神明动了恻隐之心，允许大家换回原来的烦恼。

And people rushed to reclaim their own troubles, 人们便一拥而上，抢着认领回属于自己的烦恼，

relieved, almost grateful, to have them again. 重新拿回旧烦恼的那一刻，大家如释重负，甚至心怀感激。

We see other people's lives from the outside, 我们看别人的生活，都是从外面看；

and our own from the inside, so of course theirs look lighter. 看自己的生活，却是从内里看，所以别人的日子当然显得更轻松。

Our own troubles aren't lighter than anyone else's. 我们自己的烦恼其实并不比任何人轻，

We've just learned how to carry them. 只不过我们早就学会了该怎么去承受它。
