A young art student once cornered the famous painter John Opie. 有个年轻的美术生曾拦住了著名画家约翰·奥皮。

"Excuse me, sir, may I ask what you mix your colors with?" “打扰一下，先生，请问您调色都用些什么呀？”

Opie gave him a gruff look. 奥皮没好气地看了他一眼。

"With brains, sir." “用脑子，先生。”

It sounds rude, and maybe it was. 这话听着挺冲的，或许也确实如此。

But it was also the best answer he could have given. 但这却是他所能给出的最好的回答。

He could have listed his oils and pigments and proportions, 他本可以列出一堆调色油、颜料和配比，

and the student would have walked away with a recipe and nothing else. 那样学生就只会揣着一张配方离开，此外一无所获。

Because the recipe was never the secret. 因为秘诀从来就不是那张配方。

The great Joshua Reynolds once examined a painting that was technically perfect: 伟大的约书亚·雷诺兹曾仔细端详过一幅技巧无可挑剔的画作：

good composition, correct drawing, lovely colors. 构图精良，素描准确，色彩也很讨喜。

"But it wants..." “可它缺了……”

he said, snapping his fingers, "that." 他打了个响指，“缺了那个。”

And without "that," it was worth nothing. 而没有了“那个”，它就一文不值。

Years later, another painter, William Etty, 多年以后，另一位画家威廉·埃蒂，

took over teaching at the Royal Academy. 接手了皇家艺术研究院的教职。

A student asked him, "How should I do this, sir?" 有位学生请教他：“先生，这幅画我该怎么下笔？”

"Suppose you try." “你试一试不就知道了。”

Another asked, "What does this mean?" 另一位学生问：“这是什么意思呢？”

"Suppose you look." “你仔细瞧瞧呢。”

"But I've looked." “可我已经看过了啊。”

"Then look again." “那就再看一遍。”

And they did, 他们照做了，

and they learned more than any lecture could have taught them. 而他们学到的东西，比听任何讲座都要多得多。

The most valuable things can't simply be handed to you. 最宝贵的东西，从来都不是别人直接塞给你的。

You have to work them out for yourself, 你必须靠自己去琢磨、去悟，

by thinking, trying, and looking again. 去思考、去尝试，然后一次又一次地看仔细。
