For fifty years, 整整五十年,

an old clock had been ticking away in a farmhouse kitchen without a single problem.

Then one summer morning, it suddenly stopped.

The clock face was horrified, and the hands, the wheels,

and the weights all swore it wasn't their fault.

Then a small voice spoke up.

"It was me," the pendulum admitted.

"I'm just tired of ticking."

"You lazy thing!"

snapped the face.

"Easy for you to say," the pendulum shot back.

"You get to sit up there and watch the whole kitchen.

I'm shut away in the dark,

swinging back and forth, year after year.

This morning I worked out how many times I'd have to tick in one day.

Eighty-six thousand, four hundred!

Then I started multiplying that by months,

by years, and I just couldn't face it."

The face paused, then asked,

"Would you mind ticking six times for me?"

The pendulum did.

"Was that exhausting?"

"Not at all.

It's not six I'm worried about.

It's the millions."

"But you only ever have to do one at a time," “可你每次只需要摆一下呀,”

said the face, 表盘说,

"and there'll always be a moment to do it in."

The pendulum thought it over, and then began to swing again.

Most of what wears us out isn't the work itself.

It's trying to carry all of it at once.
