According to an old Chinese legend,
people once ate all their meat raw.
Then one day, 后来有一天,
a careless boy named Bo-bo was playing with fire and accidentally burned down his father's cottage,
with a litter of piglets inside.
Poking through the ashes, he touched one of the pigs,
burned his fingers, and licked them.
And that was it.
He had just discovered crackling.
His father, Ho-ti, was furious, until he tasted it too.
Soon, strangely enough, their house kept burning down.
The neighbors caught on, and before long,
houses were going up in flames all over the country,
all for the sake of roast pork.
People built flimsier and flimsier homes,
and setting fire to them became a kind of science.
This went on for ages.
Then, at last, 直到最后,
some genius worked out that you could cook a pig without burning down a whole house.
Just a fire and a spit.
It's a ridiculous story, of course.
But it's not quite as silly as it sounds.
How many things do we still do the expensive,
exhausting way, simply because that's how it's always been done?
Every now and then, 时不时地,
it's worth asking whether we really need to burn the house down.
