In ancient Greece, there lived a wise man named Diogenes.

He believed people needed little to be happy.

So he owned almost nothing, and he slept in a big barrel.

One day, people saw him walking through the streets at noon,

carrying a lighted lamp.

"Why do you need a lamp in the sunshine?"

they asked.

"I'm looking for an honest man," he said.

When Alexander the Great came to the city,

everyone important hurried to meet him.

Diogenes didn't.

So the king went to find him.

Diogenes was lying on the ground beside his barrel, enjoying the sun.

"I've heard so much about you," said Alexander.

"Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes," said Diogenes.

"Move a little to the side.

You're blocking my sunlight."

The officers were shocked.

Alexander just smiled.

"If I weren't Alexander," he said, "I'd like to be Diogenes."
