Dick Whittington was a poor boy with no parents.

In his village,

people said the streets of London were paved with gold.

So he walked all the way there.

He found no gold, only dirt,

and nobody would give him food or work.

Hungry and tired, he sat down outside a big house.

The owner, a kind businessman named Mr. Fitzwarren,

gave him a job in the kitchen.

It wasn't an easy life.

The cook shouted at him and hit him.

And his little room at the top of the house was full of rats and mice.

One day, someone gave Dick a penny for cleaning his shoes.

He used it to buy a cat.

Before long, the rats were gone,

and Dick could finally sleep at night.

That cat was the only thing in the world that he owned.
