Mr. Fitzwarren was sending a ship to trade in faraway countries. 费茨沃伦先生要派一艘船去遥远的国家做生意。

He told his servants that each of them could send something to sell. 他对仆人们说,大家都可以捎点东西去卖。

Everyone had something, except Dick. 除了迪克,每个人都有要卖的东西。

"All I have is my cat," he said. “我全身上下就只有这只猫了,”他说。

"Then send your cat," said Mr. Fitzwarren. “那就把你的猫捎去,”费茨沃伦先生说。

Everybody laughed. 大伙儿都笑了。

With tears in his eyes, Dick carried her down to the ship. 迪克眼含泪水,把猫抱上了船。

After that, the cook was crueler than ever. 打那以后,厨子比以前更刻薄了。

Early one morning, Dick ran away. 有天一大早,迪克逃跑了。

Just outside London, he sat down on a stone to rest. 刚走到伦敦城外,他就坐在一块石头上歇脚。

Far away, the church bells began to ring, 远处,教堂的钟声敲响了,

and they seemed to be saying something. 听上去仿佛在说着什么。

"Turn again, Whittington, Lord Mayor of London." “回头吧,惠廷顿,伦敦的市长大人。”

Lord Mayor? 市长?

Him? 就凭他?

He listened again. 他又仔细听了听。

Then he stood up, turned around, and walked back. 然后他站起身,转过身往回走去。

He was in the kitchen, washing pots, before the cook came downstairs. 还没等厨子下楼,他就已经回到厨房刷锅了。
